“I Asked My Daughter Am I Beautiful?”: Kath’s Poem

A Beautiful Body Project

I asked
my
5 year old
daughter
Are you beautiful?

“You are, Mama!”

I asked

my

10 year old
daughter
Are you beautiful?

“Who cares, Mama?”

I asked
my
15 year old
daughter
Are you beautiful?

“My friend is, Mama.”

I asked
my
20 year old
daughter
Are you beautiful?

“No one is, Mama.”

I asked
my
25 year old
daughter
Are you beautiful?

“My lover is, Mama.”

I asked
my
30 year old
daughter
Are you beautiful?

“My baby is, Mama.”

I asked
my
35 year old
daughter
Are you beautiful?

“I don’t think so, Mama.”

I asked
my
40 year old
daughter
Are you beautiful?

“No, Mama.”

I asked
my
45 year old
daughter
Are you beautiful?

“Maybe, Mama.”

I asked
my
50 year old
daughter
Are you beautiful?

“We both are, Mama!”

Being in my 50’s, and having raised two daughters, this poem really resonates with me.

I love this! It describes more than just a woman’s journey to love their body, it describes how women are always looking to nurture others first before themselves. Society teaches us to sacrifice, to nurture and care for others and never ourselves. But we need to nurture and love ourselves so that we have enough to give to others. Funny how we don’t seem to figure this out until middle age, when we either realize our role as caretaker is threatened by this lack of core strength or others simply need less of us, so we can give ourselves permission to attend to ourselves..

So lovely! May we all live to see the day when “we both are, Mama” is what is always said, and it won’t take us so long to know how beautiful we really are.

Oh, this has made me tear up. It’s so true. I pray that I can teach both my daughter and son to proudly say “Yes, I am beautiful!”
